First trip
Planning your first week in Namibia
Namibia looks compact on a map and vast on the road. Here is how to shape a first visit around pacing, not a checklist.

Namibia looks compact on a map and vast on the road. The country is nearly four times the size of the United Kingdom with a fraction of the traffic, and its signature sights sit hours apart across desert, escarpment and savannah. That distance is exactly what makes it feel like nowhere else — but it means a good first trip is built on pacing, not a checklist.
A comfortable first week
Seven to ten nights is enough to experience the three landscapes most people come for: the great dunes, the Atlantic coast, and big-game country. A natural flow starts in Windhoek, drops southwest to Sossusvlei for two nights of dunes and Deadvlei at first light, crosses to Swakopmund and Walvis Bay on the cool coast for a night or two, then heads north to Etosha for two or three nights of waterhole wildlife before flying out of Windhoek.
Mind the distances
Drives of four to six hours between regions are normal, often on gravel roads that reward an unhurried pace. This is why we rarely recommend more than three bases in a first week — an extra stop usually costs a full day of driving rather than adding a new experience. If time is tight or roads feel daunting, linking the same route by light aircraft turns those transfers into scenic flights.
When to come
For a first trip weighted toward wildlife, the dry months of May to October are ideal: mild days, cold mornings, and animals concentrated at waterholes. If dramatic skies, green desert and newborn game appeal more, the November-to-April green season is quieter and softer on the budget. Either way, pack real layers — desert and Etosha mornings can start near freezing in winter.
The easiest way to plan it
Namibia rewards a route shaped around you rather than a fixed package. Tell us your dates, who’s travelling and what you’d love to see, and we’ll turn it into a private itinerary with the pacing right for a first visit.
